How common is abuse ?

It is estimated that before the age of 18 at least 1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males will have suffered from some form of sexual abuse.

That is over 20.83% of the population !!

With over 50,000,000 people in the UK, that means that there are more than 10,400,000 people in the UK alone who are, or will become, survivors of sexual abuse.

Assuming that people live 70 years that’s over 148,571 NEW victims of childhood sexual abuse per year ! This does NOT include adults who have been raped.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE !!

To put it another way... there are approximately  3,000,000 cars on the road in the UK, so if every time you see a car you think that's 3 people who have been abused you will not be far wrong.

Unfortunately the phase “abuse” is commonly used and creates strong feelings when we hear it used. The word abuse can mean used in a way that was not intended.

The Lazarus Trust has extensive experience working with abuse and the resulting life controlling effects that emotionally imprison the survivors of abuse. We offer individual or group support, for adults or children, and help for the family were abuse invades. We understand the various reactions to physical, emotional, and sexual violation - the sense of powerlessness, hopelessness and betrayal.

If you would like to talk about your experience or need help to support someone who has been abused.
